Who is Justin Robbins from Jeopardy? Inside the Scientist’s Journey From Sea Turtles and Mangroves to the Quiz Show Stage

Long before reaching Jeopardy!, Justin Robbins was asking questions about how complicated systems work.

For Robbins, however, those systems were ecosystems.

The Murrells Inlet, South Carolina graduate student has studied subjects ranging from mangrove expansion and marine organisms to grazing cattle and grassland ecology.

His path through environmental science has involved laboratories, coastal fieldwork, conservation organizations and multiple universities.

His Scientific Interests Began Early

Robbins has experienced strong intellectual interests since childhood.

Astronomy was one of his earliest.

Biology and history followed, eventually becoming the two subjects he formally studied at Tufts University.

He graduated in 2017 after pursuing both fields, combining an interest in natural science with an interest in human societies.

Research at Tufts Led to a Scientific Publication

Robbins participated in research as an undergraduate that ultimately contributed to the scientific literature.

He became a co-author of a paper published in Biology Letters in 2023 examining seasonal changes in the body-mass index of Crepidula fornicata, a marine gastropod.

Scientific research therefore became part of his career well before his current graduate work.

Florida Conservation Work Brought Him Face-to-Face With Wildlife

Robbins subsequently gained hands-on conservation experience in southwest Florida.

His work included involvement with the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation and exposed him to the practical side of habitat and wildlife management.

Among his experiences was helping monitor, measure and release endangered sea turtles.

His time in Florida also helped deepen his interest in coastal environments and mangroves.

Mangroves Became a Graduate Research Focus

At Villanova University, Robbins pursued a Master of Science in Biology.

His research included studying the northward expansion of mangroves along Florida’s northeastern coast.

He graduated in 2023 and subsequently continued his environmental research at Clemson University.

There, his work broadened into additional ecological systems.

At Clemson, He Has Studied Cattle and Grasslands

Robbins’ Clemson research has included a project involving Pineywoods cattle at Brosnan Forest.

The project examined rotational grazing and investigated its effects on forage quantity and quality.

That work required integrating field research, laboratory analysis and existing scientific literature.

It also reflects one of the recurring themes of Robbins’ career: understanding how human land-management decisions interact with ecological systems.

Robbins’ Story Also Includes Years of Autism Advocacy

Science is only one significant part of his biography.

Robbins was diagnosed as autistic during his junior year of high school and later became active in autistic self-advocacy.

While studying at Tufts, he co-founded the Coalition for Autism Support at Tufts.

CAST was designed as a community created by autistic students themselves rather than simply an organization speaking about them.

Robbins eventually served as its president.

His 2017 TEDx Talk Took His Advocacy to a Larger Audience

Robbins delivered a TEDxTufts presentation in 2017 called “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Autism?”

He challenged negative and fear-based narratives about autism and emphasized the importance of including autistic voices directly in public conversations.

His advocacy has subsequently touched on subjects ranging from education and university life to friendship, disclosure and experiences in STEM.

He’s Also a Serious Tabletop Gamer

Robbins’ hobbies reveal another side of his intellectual interests.

He served as president of Tufts’ tabletop gaming club and has identified strategy-heavy titles such as Twilight Struggle among his favorite games.

He also enjoys science fiction and fantasy, including Doctor Who, Star Trek and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Throw in Hamilton, history, biology, astronomy and a fondness for puns, and Robbins arrives at Jeopardy! with interests extending considerably beyond his scientific specialty.
