Who is Carolyn Langton from Jeopardy? How a Newspaper Editor Reinvented Herself as a Software Developer
Carolyn Langton’s career demonstrates that an undergraduate degree doesn’t necessarily determine an entire professional life.
Before becoming the application developer viewers meet on Jeopardy!, Langton was immersed in journalism.
She studied journalism at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire, worked in student media and eventually led the university newspaper.
Years later, she retrained almost completely, entering professional software development.

Leading The Spectator
As a student, Langton became Editor-in-Chief of The Spectator.
That put her at the center of an operation involving reporters, editors, photographers, designers and multimedia staff.
Her interests crossed several areas of media production. In addition to editing, she worked with photography and design and served as webmaster for university radio station WUEC-FM.
Some of her photography from this period has continued circulating through Wisconsin media.
Why She Returned to School
From 2014 to 2016, Langton attended Northcentral Technical College to develop the skills required for a technology career.
The curriculum was extensive rather than introductory.
She studied databases, Advanced SQL, object-oriented programming, client-side scripting, mobile programming, web programming, software architecture, UX design and collaborative software development.
It represented a significant professional reinvention from journalism into programming.
Nearly a Decade With WPPI Energy
Langton joined WPPI Energy in April 2017.
The not-for-profit power company works with locally owned electric utilities, while Langton serves within its information technology organization as an Application Developer.
By her 2026 Jeopardy! appearance, she had been with the organization for more than nine years.
A Career Connecting Communication and Technology
Although journalism and programming can look like unrelated careers, Langton’s background connects them through digital communication and information organization.
Her university work already included online publishing and web administration before she formally retrained in development.
Her eventual progression from newspaper Editor-in-Chief to professional application developer gives Langton one of the more unusual career paths among her fellow Jeopardy! contestants.
