Who is Dan Perkey from Jeopardy? From Spartan History and German Beer to Open-Water Swimming

Ancient Greece.

German beer.

Competitive swimming.

Museum work.

Any one of those could easily appear as a Jeopardy! category.

Dan Perkey has substantial experience with all of them.

The brewer originally from Pittsburgh has built a life around both physical competition and intellectual curiosity.

Ancient Sparta Was Once His Main Academic Focus

Perkey pursued graduate history at the University of Chicago.

His thesis examined the Spartan hegemony and why it ultimately failed.

The title, “Destined to Fail: Re-Examining the Downfall of the Spartan Hegemony Before and After 404 BCE,” shows the specificity of his research.

He wasn’t simply interested in ancient history broadly.

He focused on one of classical Greece’s most important political and military transitions.

A Museum Career Followed

Perkey’s expertise led naturally into work at the National Hellenic Museum.

As a Museum Experience Associate, he could apply his academic interest in Greek history within a public cultural institution.

That work required translating historical knowledge for visitors rather than writing only for academic audiences.

Beer Became Another Serious Pursuit

At some point, another tradition-heavy interest became increasingly important: brewing.

Perkey developed hands-on brewing experience and entered judged competitions.

His Schwarzbier “Ausschank” earned a third-place result.

Even the beer style reflects his interest in German tradition.

Living in Düsseldorf Deepened the Connection

Perkey later lived with his partner in Düsseldorf for approximately three years.

Few locations could better suit someone fascinated by traditional German beer.

Düsseldorf is famous for Altbier and a distinctive local drinking culture centered on historic breweries.

Perkey also learned enough German to reach limited working proficiency.

Swimming Has Been With Him Since Pittsburgh

His athletic career began much earlier.

At Carlynton High School, Perkey competed in breaststroke and reached major Pennsylvania high-school meets.

He also played baseball.

Swimming, however, remained the sport that followed him into adulthood.

Chicago Smelts Became His Adult Team

In Chicago, Perkey joined the Masters-swimming community.

He became involved with the Chicago Smelts, an LGBTQ+-focused Masters organization.

His competition record includes well over 100 recorded swims.

He also earned coaching certifications.

A Five-Kilometer Open-Water Swim Shows the Scale of His Commitment

In 2016, Perkey completed Chicago’s Big Shoulders 5K.

Five kilometers of open-water swimming is very different from a short pool race.

It demands endurance, navigation and the ability to manage conditions outside the controlled environment of a pool.

Perkey finished in 1:22:21.

Why His Biography Feels Made for Jeopardy

Perkey’s interests don’t cluster neatly in one academic or professional category.

History and brewing connect through Europe.

Swimming and coaching add a completely different dimension.

Museum work adds public education.

That range is exactly what makes his appearance on a general-knowledge competition feel so natural.
