Who is Katie Bruns from Jeopardy? How an Ohio Archives Professional Prepared for Her Shot at the Quiz Show

Katie Bruns has a profession unusually well matched to the idea of retrieving information.

The Dayton, Ohio resident works in records and archives, where organizing information and ensuring it remains accessible are central responsibilities.

On Jeopardy!, however, the retrieval system is her own memory.

Bruns appears during Season 43 as a Records & Information Professional, bringing with her an educational background spanning English, library science and information management.

What Does Katie Bruns Do for a Living?

Bruns is a Record Center Technician with the Montgomery County Records Center and Archives.

Records centers are responsible for managing material produced by government agencies and ensuring records are properly maintained, preserved and accessible.

It is detailed work that sits somewhere between archival preservation, information management and public administration.

Bruns’ graduate education prepared her specifically for that environment.

After completing a bachelor’s degree in English at the University of Dayton, she earned a master’s degree in Library and Information Science from Kent State University.

She Has Loved Jeopardy Since Childhood

Bruns’ appearance wasn’t the result of suddenly discovering trivia as an adult.

She grew up with the show.

Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune formed part of her family’s post-dinner television routine, and Bruns remembers watching from the floor of her grandparents’ living room.

Her eventual appearance on the show therefore represents the realization of something that had been present throughout much of her life.

From Coldwater to Dayton and Eventually Culver City

Bruns is originally from Coldwater, Ohio, and graduated from Coldwater High School in 2010.

She later attended the University of Dayton and eventually established herself professionally in Dayton.

Her Jeopardy! journey took her much farther from home.

After taking the Anytime Test in June 2026, she passed through two rounds of virtual auditions.

By late July, she knew she had been selected.

On August 26, 2026, she was at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City to tape the real thing.

A Clicky Pen Became Part of Her Training

Bruns knew that simply learning additional facts wouldn’t necessarily be enough.

The Jeopardy! signaling device can have an enormous influence on a contestant’s performance because players cannot successfully ring in until the system is activated.

To prepare for that element, she practiced using a clicky pen.

She also rehearsed saying answers aloud as questions.

It might seem like a small detail to someone watching from home, but under studio pressure, making the required response format instinctive can eliminate one additional thing a contestant has to think about.

She Didn’t Try to Cram the Entire Encyclopedia

Another notable part of Bruns’ preparation was what she didn’t do.

She resisted attempting to learn everything.

Instead, she played trivia games, watched Jeopardy! extensively and strengthened areas in which she already had a useful base.

Literature, vocabulary and history rank among her stronger subjects.

Musicals are another favorite.

Those interests fit naturally with her English background while giving her a reasonably broad range of potential strengths on the board.

Her Approach Was About the Experience as Much as the Result

Bruns wasn’t interested in turning a lifelong dream into a miserable exercise in pressure.

She wanted to compete effectively, but she also wanted to appreciate what was happening.

Her intended strategy was to recognize favorable categories, exercise greater caution elsewhere and avoid making aggressive Daily Double hunting the defining feature of her game.

Whatever happened on the scoreboard, simply reaching the Jeopardy! stage represented the culmination of a journey that began years earlier in an Ohio living room.
